Chinese cultural group suspects communist saboteurs after gaffe-filled Calgary shows

The staff at a Calgary auditorium were apparently so rude and incompetent during a series of recent Chinese cultural performances that organizers suspect they may have been under the sway of communist saboteurs.
Shen Yun Performing Arts, a New York-based Chinese cultural group, were beset by a series of technical gaffes last week while performing at Calgary's provincially run Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium. In one performance, the crew missed a light cue, forcing performers to "scurry off the stage in full view of the audience, which instantaneously ruined the show's artistic merits," according to a statement by the Falun Dafa Association of Calgary, which presented the show.
In another incident, the crew accidentally drew open the doors to the women's change room, exposing disrobed dancers to male crew members. The response of Jubilee management "was not one of concern, but of condescension and laughter," wrote Falun Dafa. Shen Yun also objected to a safety net installed over the orchestra pit at a performance in 2010, saying that their musicians "felt disrespected, as it was akin to being displayed in a cage."
Organizers noted that the Chinese Communist Party is a vocal opponent of Shen Yun, and will often attempt to pressure venues into dropping the group from their calendars. "While we appreciate that the government of Alberta would not overtly discriminate against us at the behest of a foreign government, Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium management appears nonetheless feels they can treat Shen Yun with utter disrespect," said Jenny Yang, a volunteer with Falun Dafa.
